CONTEXT CLUES

Context clues are words and phrases that help us to understand the meaning of sentences.

1.       Definition

Explain or give definition of something. The keywords are is, are,refers to,is/are called,means,is known as,can be called, etc.

e.g. bolu kemojo is known as traditional food of Riau.

  2.  Example

  Explain or clarify the unfamiliar words. The keywords are for example, such as,for instance,including,especially, etc .

e.g. Fitri likes many kind of fruits such as apple, pear,grape, and rambutan.

3. Cause and Effect

Explain the reason and it’s effect, there is a relationship between them. The keywords are because,because of,so.due to,as a result,so that,thus.therefore etc.

 e.g. because of his mother, he continues his study in England.

4. Contrast

Explain something contrast in the sentence. The keywords are but,though,although,yet,however, etc.

e.g. the sun was shining however it had been raining.

5.restatement

There is difficult sentence , and then we restate to be easyone. The keywords are or,in the other hand,that is, etc.

e.g. students memoryze information, in other word they learn and remember all of the material that the teachers have given.

6.Modifier

From general sentence to specific sentence. The keywords are such as, who,whom,whose,which,that, etc.

e.g. The women who standing overthere is my mother, waits for me.

Examples :

Ø  learning is making mistake process, from the mistake we learn to do the correct one.

Ø  He dd not do the assignment, so he got punishment.

Ø  I like cat, but my sister dislikes it.

Ø  Pacu jalur-or-routine tradition of Taluk Kuantan-will be held on august.

Ø  The book which you read is good.

PREFIX, ROOT, AND SUFFIX

Prefix           :  beginning  or in front of root

Root             :  basic meaning of words

Preffix         :  after the root

 FORMULATION

v  ROOT                                                    :               word, cry, stand, love, dog .

v  ROOT + ROOT                                    :               termometer, motorcycle, sociology, telegram

v  PREFIX + ROOT                                  :               unread, amoral, disagree, preview

v  ROOT + SUFFIX                                 :               motivless, likely, darkness, teroissm, dangerous

v  PREFIX + ROOT +SUFFIX                                :               affairness, disagreement, reaction,

Examples :

Ø  Interelationship = the condition between two people or more

Inter = prefix = between

Relation = root = conected with someone

Ship = suffix = condition

Ø  Structural = adjective of  the way something is built or organized

Structure =root =  arrange or organize something

Al = suffix = adjective : quality, relation

Ø  Overweight = too heavy oe fat

Over = prefix = too much

Weight = how heavy /fat somebody or something is

Ø  Cooked = perpare food by heating it in the past time

Cook = root = prepare food by heating it

-ed = suffix = verb : past tense

Ø  Lengthen = cause something to become longer

Length = root = long thin piece of something

-en = suffix = to cause to become
